The throwout bearing is an important part of the clutch system, as this is the final link between the clutch pedal and the pressure plate. When you press the clutch pedal, this bearing is forced forward, contacting the pressure plate in order to disengage the clutch.
If this bearing fails, you may notice excessive noise when you press the clutch pedal, and a clutch that is increasingly difficult to disengage.
What’s more, this throwout bearing is a complete assembly which includes the clutch slave cylinder as well. This means that failure can also occur due to a hydraulic failure. If your clutch pedal seems to be getting spongy, and you have noticed hydraulic fluid on your garage floor, a failed slave cylinder may be to blame.
If you are doing any work on the clutch system, it is recommended that this throwout bearing assembly be replaced.
