Description
There is more to the accessory belt drive system than just the belt and some pulleys, and one such component in the system is the belt tensioner damper.
This damper is a small, gas shock absorber, and it is used to soak up the shock produced in the belt drive system by variations in engine RPM. Over time, this tensioner damper will wear out, the gas will leak out from inside of it, and the bushings at either end will fail. When this happens, not only will the tensioner damper no longer work as intended, it will also produce and annoying rattle from under the hood.
If you are replacing your belt tensioner damper, now would be the perfect time to inspect the other components in your belt drive system, and replace any that are showing signs of wear.
