The cam follower is the piece that rides on the camshaft to push the exhaust valves open. If the follower has been damaged or worn through, the stem of the valve can come in direct contact with the camshaft, causing damage and incorrect valve timing.

Chances are that you won't notice when they begin to fade, so be sure to check on them every so often during service while you're in the area.
