This contact spiral, sometimes called a clock spring, is what allows electrical components in the steering wheel to send and receive electrical signals. Components such as the horn, airbag and any switches mounted in the steering wheel depend on this contact spiral.
This contact spiral assembly also incorporates a steering angle sensor, which tells the ABS and traction control modules the exact degree of angle the steering wheel is at.
