The Diesel engine in your Mercedes-Benz is an expertly engineered and crafted machine, capable of years of service. There is one thing that the Diesel engine is not capable of, however, and that is producing vacuum.
Since Diesel engines have no throttle plates, they are not capable of developing their own vacuum to operate things such as the brake booster or the EGR system. The Diesel engine, instead, relies on a vacuum pump to generate the vacuum required to run many vehicle systems.
This vacuum pump bolts to the front of the timing case and is driven off of a rotor on the front of the injection pump. Although capable of functioning for many years, the vacuum pump will eventually require replacement for continued operation of your engine.
If you have stated to notice noise coming from the vacuum pump on your engine, or have noticed that some of the vacuum powered systems are not functioning properly, it may be time to replace your vacuum pump.
This pump should be replaced at the earliest symptoms of failure, as once the pump fails completely, it can drop metallic components, such as bearings, into the timing case leading to complete engine failure.
