Timing chain guides help to maintain proper alignment and function of the timing chain and are an important component in the cam timing system. These guides are usually made of soft materials such as plastic and can be considered wear items. When replacing a timing chain, inspect these items for signs of wear and replace accordingly. Engines with deferred (missed) maintenance intervals or low oil pressure symptoms often result in increased timing chain guide wear. A broken or worn through guide can result in further engine damage as well as increased chain drive noise.
