Description
The ignition system on your engine is highly sophisticated and uses a multitude of sensors and control units to operate efficiently while still delivering excellent power output and clean emissions.
One such sensor that the ignition system uses is the knock sensor. This sensor is located on the engine block and is used to detect pre-ignition or pinging, caused by low grade fuel or worn ignition components, which can be damaging to internal engine components.
This sensor is able to pick up the slightest vibrations in the engine cause by pre-ignition. This signal is then sent to the ECU and the ignition timing is adjusted to prevent engine damage. In doing this, however, you may notice that the engine has lost some power, and you may even have a check engine light illuminated.
If your knock sensor has failed, it must be replaced to keep you ignition system operating correctly, and your engine running properly.
