A piston ring is a split ring that fits into a groove on the outer diameter of a piston. The three main functions of piston rings in reciprocating engines are, sealing the combustion/expansion chamber, supporting heat transfer from the piston to the cylinder wall and regulating engine oil consumption.

Compression testing is the best way to check the condition of an engine with some mileage on it. If your compression numbers across the cylinders are low, it's time to replace your piston rings.

This is a piston ring set of standard size for each cylinder. So as many cylinders as you have, that's how many sets you will need. New rings will restore your compression and keep your vehicle from burning oil and smoking.

Because piston ring replacement is such a large job, do ample research to find if you are going to be able to complete it yourself. Don't forget all the associated items that will need replaced such as gaskets, connecting rod bearings, and head bolts as well as any tools you may need.
