The engine coolant expansion tank sits right next to the engine and experiences thousands of heat cycles that eventually degrade the integrity of the plastic tank. When this happens cracks are prone to forming and ultimately a coolant leak occurs. In extreme cases with a major loss of coolant engine damage can occur. If your expansion tank is old or the plastic is turning yellow then replacement is recommended as preventative maintenance before any major failure happens.
