Description
The hydraulic power steering system on you Mercedes-Benz is a wonderful feature that assists in turning the steering wheel, especially at low speeds when steering resistance is at its greatest.
In order to provide this assistance, the power steering system relies on a hydraulic pump to supply hydraulic fluid to the steering gear assembly. This pump however, will not last forever. Over the years, the bearings inside of this pump will wear out, and the pump will have to be replaced in order for the power steering system to continue functioning.
If you have noticed erratic power steering behavior or a squealing noise coming from under the hood, especially when turning the steering wheel, your power steering pump may be at the end of its life.
If you are replacing your power steering pump, be sure to have everything you need to do the job, including any power steering lines that may be starting to leak, as well as enough of the correct hydraulic fluid to re-fill the system once the repair is done.
