The cooling system on your Mercedes-Benz needs to be sealed in order to function properly. If it is not sealed, coolant will leak out leading to overheating and engine damage.

Though this housing is made of aluminum, and will likely last the lifetime of the vehicle, it may crack if it suffers a direct impact. Once this housing cracks, it will begin to leak coolant which can lead to overheating conditions.

If you are replacing your thermostat or just removing the bleeder bolt, consider replacing the housing as well.
