The suspension stabilizer bar, also known as an anti-roll bar, sway bar (and conversely, anti-sway bar, is used to reduce body roll of a vehicle during cornering. Stabilizer bars, as implied in name, also help to stabilize the car when traveling over road irregularities at speed. They do this by acting as a torsion spring, linking both sides of the car together. The connection is made using a short arm referred to as a stabilizer bar link. An early sign of a warn out stabilizer bar link is a hollow knocking noise in the suspension while driving over bumpy roads. Links should be inspected for wear and replaced early. Sufficiently worn links can separate fully and cause unsafe car handling.
