The purge control valve is a computer-controlled solenoid valve that opens to purge fuel vapors from the charcoal canister, into the running engine for burning. The valve also serves a diagnostic purpose, as it remains closed during onboard tests, that check for fuel vapor leaks to the atmosphere. A failed purge valve can cause engine performance problems and store diagnostic trouble codes.
