The accelerator pedal opens the intake manifold throttle plate through a drive-by-wire system. As the pedal is pressed down, the sensor in the attached electronic control module sends a signal to the throttle body to start opening the throttle plate, then more air is introduced into the manifold and the vehicle accelerates faster.
